Donnie Smith was
elected sheriff in 2006 to replace retiring sheriff Joe Tibbetts.
Smith joined the department in 1979, the same year he graduated from
the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
In 2002 the Maine
Sheriff's Association named Sergeant Smith Deputy of the Year for
his service to the community.
Throughout his
career, Sheriff Smith has worked with school-aged youth to promote drug
awareness. A proponent of R.A.D (Residents Attacking Drugs), Sheriff
Smith established his own organization -- Kids, Cops, and K-9's --
to help bridge the gap between law enforcement and at risk youth.
Sheriff Smith
graduated from Washington Academy in 1971. Before going into law
enforcement, Sheriff Smith served in the USMC. He lives in Lubec
with his wife, Lynne, and daughter, Janessa.
