Sheriff's Department
Duties
The main role of the
Washington County Sheriff is to act as chief law enforcement officer
for the county.
State law
establishes the county commissioners as overseers of the Washington
County Sheriff's Department.
The County Sheriff
must also obey all orders from the Governor regarding law
enforcement.

Specifically, the
county sheriff will receive a salary for the following duties, as
defined in
30-A, MRSA, sec 373:
- Attending State
Supreme Court and Superior Court sessions.
- Serving as
chief jailer.
- Receiving and
committing prisoners to county jail.
- Service of all
criminal and civil processes, including warrants and summons.
- Enforcement of
all criminal laws.
