Election & Term of Office

Sheriffs are elected or appointed and hold their offices according to the Constitution of Maine. Like county commissioners, they are elected to four year terms. They assume office on the first day of the New Year following their election. (30-A, MRSA, sec 371-B).

Sheriff Donnie Smith was elected on November 7, 2006 to replace retiring Sheriff Joseph Tibbetts. A brief biography of Sheriff Smith can be found to your right.
