The Washington County Corrections facility, located in Machias, can serve up to 42 inmates at any given time. The facility has a kitchen, law library, and a recreational area.

Washington County has 21 full and part time corrections officers who maintain the facility around the clock. These officers are also charged with guarding inmates, and accompanying them on work release assignments, and district court proceedings.

Ms. Look, the Corrections Clerk has several important duties that keep County corrections running smoothly:

  • assist corrections administrator.
  • assist administrative assistant to the Sheriff.
  • corrections billing.
  • procurement for the commissary.

As noted above, Washington County has an active work-release program where inmates are escorted to sites across the county to work on specified municipal projects.

Inmates assigned to county corrections have either been convicted of a class B or C felony or a misdemeanor, and can be held for 364 days before being remanded to the Department of Corrections.

County corrections also holds inmates awaiting pre-trail, or between conviction and sentencing. Inmates assigned to County corrections awaiting trial may be housed at the facility until their trial has been completed regardless of whether it exceeds 364 days.
