The Washington
County Corrections facility, located in Machias, can serve up to
42 inmates at any given time. The facility has a kitchen, law
library, and a recreational area.
Washington County
has 21 full and part time corrections officers who maintain the
facility around the clock. These officers are also charged with
guarding inmates, and accompanying them on work release
assignments, and district court proceedings.
Ms. Look, the
Corrections Clerk has several important duties that keep County
corrections running smoothly:
- assist
corrections administrator.
- assist
administrative assistant to the Sheriff.
- corrections billing.
- procurement
for the commissary.
As noted above,
Washington County has an active work-release program where
inmates are escorted to sites across the county to work on
specified municipal projects.
Inmates assigned
to county corrections have either been convicted of a class B or
C felony or a misdemeanor, and can be held for 364 days before
being remanded to the Department of Corrections.
County
corrections also holds inmates awaiting pre-trail, or between
conviction and sentencing. Inmates assigned to County
corrections awaiting trial may be housed at the facility until
their trial has been completed regardless of whether it exceeds
364 days.
