Before he
takes office, the Sheriff of Washington County must adhere to a
high standard of ethics. That standard, outlined in our State's
Constitution, guarantees that a highly qualified, professional
law enforcement officer assumes public office.
First, the
sheriff must swear to or affirm the
Law Enforcement Code of Ethics,
observed both by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and the
International Association of Chiefs of Police.
The sheriff must
also undergo a criminal background check through the Secretary
of State, and may not be convicted of a Class C or higher crime.
Also, the
sheriff must provide written certification from the Maine
Criminal Justice Academy that he has met the basic law
enforcement training requirements under
Title 25, section 2804-C
or the basic corrections training requirements under
Title 25, section 2804-D
and has five years of "supervisory employment experience".
