Patrol

Washington County has six full time patrol officers which are assigned to three divisions.

Northern Division: Danforth to Robbinston.
Central Division: Robbinston to Jonesboro
Western Division: Jonesboro to Steuben

The Town of Lubec has also contracted with the Washington County Sheriff's Office for patrol officers.

A patrol officer is equipped to handle all crimes, but primarily deals with:

  • Robberies
  • Burglaries
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Motor vehicle infractions
  • Apprehension of suspects
  • Assisting local police force

K-9 Unit

Washington County has a highly experienced K-9 unit, headed up by Sheriff Smith, Deputy St. Louis, Sgt. Dennis Perry, and their dogs -- a golden retriever, German Shepard, and German pointer respectively.

This unit handles mostly drug detection and search and rescues. It is supported at no expense to the taxpayer.

Court Security

Washington County's Court Security unit provides security leading up to and during all district court procedures. Size of the unit may vary depending on the caseload before District court.

Criminal Investigations

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for investigating an assortment of crimes, including:

  • Child abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Sexual assaults
  • Missing persons
  • cyber-crimes

The Washington County Sheriff's Department does not investigate homicides or arsons, although they may a supporting role in these types of investigations. Homicides are investigated by the Maine State Police, while arsons are handled by the Maine Fire Marshall's Office.
